A build up of beta amyloid plaque was previously thought to cause Alheimer's. Amyloid is a protective response and is part of the bodys' immune system. For more than a decade, however, other researchers have suspected and a 2015 Mayo Clinic study has shown that a protein called Tau kills neurons and is the real culprit. There are 3 categories of alzheimers. One: inflammatory. Two: atrophic (lack of ingredients needed to support memory). Three: toxic.  Studies have demonstrated that people with Alzheimer's have far more ß-amyloid plaques in their brains than healthy people, at least as a general rule. But they have also revealed a puzzle: Roughly 30% of people without any signs of dementia have brains “chock-full” of ß-amyloid at autopsy, says neurologist Beau Ances at Washington University in St. Louis in Missouri. But in the past several years, researchers have developed PET imaging agents that can harmlessly bind to tau in the living brain. In the new study, Ances and colleagues used one of these tags and an amyloid-binding one to analyze deposits of both proteins in 10 people with mild AD and 36 healthy adults. The more tau deposits found in the temporal lobe, a brain region associated with memory, the more likely a person was to show deficits on a battery of memory and attention tests. Although the brain may be able compensate for the deficits caused by ß-amyloid, once tau starts to spread, “that pushes you over,” he says. 10 Foods That Prevent Dementia & Alzheimer's

1. Leafy greens. Some ideas: kale, spinach, collard and mustard greens. These foods are high in folate and B9, which improve cognition and reduce depression.

2. Cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, brussels sprouts and kale contain folate and have cartenoids that lower homo-cysteine (an amino acid linked with cognitive impairment).

3. Beans and legumes. These foods contain more folate, iron, magensium and potassium that can help with general body function and neuron firing. They also contain choline, a B vitamin that boosts acetylcholine (a neuro transmitter critical for brain function).

4. Whole grains. Good bets include quinoa, kammut and gluten-free oats (not bread and cereal)

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH): It’s a buildup of fluid in the brain that causes mental confusion and deterioration of motor skills. The Hydrocephalus Association estimates about 700,000 seniors have the disease.

The tragedy is that most of them are misdiagnosed. They may live impaired for years without anybody knowing that a simple treatment will bring them back to normal. They may even be sent to a nursing home. A relatively minor procedure to drain fluid from the brain usually ends the problem.

B12 deficiency: As we age, it is more difficult for our bodies to absorb this crucial vitamin. Researchers estimate that up to 20% of people over 50 are B12 deficient. This can cause confusion, forgetfulness, personality changes, and balance problems that mimic Alzheimer’s. A simple blood test can detect B12 deficiency.

Blood sugar instability: Untreated diabetes can lead to the same types of mental problems seen in Alzheimer’s patients. Blood sugar swings damage blood vessels in the brain. This causes memory problems, confusion, and limited attention span.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs): UTIs in seniors can cause symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s disease. Often, the elderly don’t have the typical UTI symptoms of a high fever and pain or burning during urination.

Some types are especially responsive to the compound curcumin. Curcumin is the yellow pigment extracted from turmeric and is one of three known curcuminoids in turmeric. Curcumin has demonstrated incredible anti-cancer benefits. Over 2,000 published studies have shown curcumin combats cancers of the breast, prostate, liver, colon, lung, pancreas and more. Many of these studies have shown curcumin actually stops cancer cells from dividing. Turmeric’s active compound curcumin, causes cellular death in cancer cells, but without any nasty side effects or immune suppression. And studies have shown that curcumin even kills cancer stem cells, the "mother" cells that control the growth and spread of cancer cell colonies.   2. Try some oil. Combining turmeric with a healthy oil is another effective way to get more health benefits for your buck. That’s because turmeric is fat-soluble, which means it dissolves in fat, allowing your body to absorb it.
  3. Add some black pepper. Research has shown the compound piperine, which is found in black pepper, can prevent curcumin from being booted out of your body so quickly. That gives your body more time to absorb it and take advantage of its many benefits.

Turmeric root has a light flavor and can be grated or chopped and added to recipes. Turmeric powder can be used on eggs, added to soups and sauces, or rubbed on vegetables or chicken. Chicken Curry is a flavorful dish that includes plenty of this bright yellow spice. Adding turmeric to vegetables and then roasting them adds both color and flavor. Coat veggies in olive oil, sea salt, and black pepper, and add turmeric, ginger, and cumin for a tasty dish. This same recipe also works great as a marinade for grilled vegetables.

Be aware that turmeric contains a very strong color that can easily stain your hands, clothes, and countertops. However, it’s this intense pigment that also makes it great for adding color to plain white rice or cauliflower by sprinkling some turmeric powder on top. (Again, combine with a bit of healthy oil and a liberal sprinkle of black pepper for added benefit.) To make a healing tea, you can finely slice or grate fresh turmeric root. Add along with some grated or sliced ginger root to a teapot and steep in hot water. Sweeten your tea if desired with local honey or green leaf stevia.
